Transdermal Testosterone Gel
The gel substance in these medications permeates through the skin like a transport system for the testosterone. Common brands are AndroGel ®, Fortesta ® & Testim ® and they need a prescription from a medical doctor. Gels must be applied 1-2 times every day to maintain testosterone levels. Unfortunately testosterone gels do not work well for everyone. Some guys could literally bathe
in a testosterone gel and still not get enough testosterone into their blood stream to reach optimal levels.
Apply at Your Own Risk…Actually, Everyone’s Risk
Gels are typically much more expensive and due to the transdermal process are much more risky. They can cause skin irritation and it is the responsibility of the man using the testosterone gel to avoid coming into contact with their female partner or any kids soon after application. Contact with women could cause virilization (masculine traits). Contact with children could affect their natural maturation
and growth process.
Side Effects of Testosterone Gel
Due to the transdermal (through the skin) process of this application method, gels carry more risk for the patient and those around them. According to AndroGel.com, testosterone gel can cause serious side effects, including:
- Worsening symptoms of an enlarged prostate
- Possible increased risk of prostate cancer
- Lower sperm count
- Swelling of ankles, feet, or body
- Enlarged or painful breasts
- Problems breathing during sleep
- Blood clots in the legs
- Skin irritation where the gel is applied
- Increased cholesterol levels
- Increased prostate specific antigen (a test used to screen for prostate cancer)
- Increased red blood cell count
- Increased liver function tests
Recent studies have shown testosterone gels, like AndroGel, may be linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Not Worth The Risk
It is our opinion that the benefits of testosterone gel do not outweigh the risk, so we do not offer testosterone gel to our patients. There are much more effective ways to boost your testosterone levels that carry much lower risk for the individual and those around him.
